Abstract

Persons with severe aphasia, who have restricted verbal abilities, often receive AAC-training to use other communication channels. The efficacy of this therapy is not yet sufficiently established. The Scenario Test, a new instrument designed to assess verbal and non-verbal communication in an interactive setting, was administered to 122 people with aphasia. The test shows good validity, reliability and sensitivity to change. It can serve as an outcome measure in future studies of AAC-training in aphasia. Further, it provides insight in the communicative abilities of a person with aphasia, which helps to tailor AAC training to the individual’s capabilities and limitations.
