Abstract
Grodzinsky’s (1989) Trace Deletion Hypothesis (TDH) proposes that agrammatic Broca’s aphasics cannot assign correct thematic roles to transformationally-derived structures. Not having access to the grammatical traces, these patients apply a default strategy assigning the agent role to the first noun phrase in the sentence. This paper investigates cross-linguistic plausibility of TDH by testing the comprehension of Turkish restricted relative clauses in agrammatic Broca’s patients. Eleven patients and ten control participants were involved in a sentence-picture matching task. Turkish data do not lend support for the default strategy offered by TDH.
