Abstract

Thorough participant description and control are vital for appropriate experimental design, analysis of results, interpretation of findings, readers’ understanding and interpretation of reports, generalization of conclusions, comparisons across studies, replicability, and meta-analyses in aphasia research. Practices in the control for and description of participant characteristics in research on aphasia were examined in all experimental articles on aphasia published in each of 32 scientific journals over an 18-year period, from 1990 through 2008. Published aphasia research commonly lacks critical aspects of participant description and control. There has been no significant trend of improvement in this regard over the past 18 years.
