Abstract

This study investigated the effects of age on phonological processing for word retrieval. Results revealed age effects on both segmental and syllabic phonological tasks, with particular difficulty at the syllabic level. Additionally, the data suggests that phonological age effects were neither due to cognitive nor early visual processing delays, but rather to stage-specific phonological processing deficits. Implications of the study are that older adults might benefit from practice with phonological tasks, mainly of syllabic information, to improve lexical retrieval. Additionally, improved methods of assessment and treatment of naming in both the non-clinical and, by extension, clinical populations, can be derived.
