Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate switching in adults with aphasia. In modified go/no-go tasks, adults with mild or moderate aphasia and healthy controls switched between go/no-go rules with minimized cognitive and linguistic demands. Several nonlinguistic and linguistic executive function tests that involved switching were administered. Adults with aphasia were slower, less accurate and less likely to disregard the previous rule when switching between rules. These deficits are representative of impaired reconfiguration control and interference. Positive relationships among nonlinguistic switching and lack of relationships between linguistic and nonlinguistic switching implied separate switching processes.
