Abstract

Ten normal young, ten normal older, and ten aphasic individuals participated in an online category verification task where primes were ad hoc category labels while targets were typical examples, atypical examples, nonmembers or nonwords. Results indicated that for all the three groups, accuracy and reaction time of atypical items was significantly worse than all other response types (p<.001). Additionally, the accuracy and reaction time of aphasic patients were significantly worse on all items compared to young and older adults (p<.001). The results of the present experiment illustrate typicality effect in ad hoc categories.
