Abstract

To communicate, individuals with severe aphasia require facilitation by a skilled partner and must use non-verbal modalities. This study evaluated a brief early rehabilitation intervention incorporating both group-based partner education and dyad communication skills training including supported use of gesture and drawing. A single-subject multiple-baseline across behaviors design was employed, and elicited communication between the aphasic participant and their partner was analyzed. Results for six dyads will be presented. All communication partners modified aspects of their communication behavior and four of the six aphasic participants showed increased use of non-verbal communication. Four dyads communicated more successfully because of these changes.
