Abstract

Agrammatic speech lacks determiners and pronouns. This study investigates if and how syntactic, lexical and pragmatic properties of determiners and pronouns contribute to this lack. We analysed spontaneous speech samples and compared these to control data. The results imply that lexical properties, i.e. gender information, are preserved. Syntactic properties are an important factor, as the relationship between the realisation of case-assigning elements and determiners indicates. Finally, only few pragmatic errors are made, suggesting that pragmatic knowledge is preserved. However, different omission rates for indefinite and definite determiners indicate that pragmatic properties may play a role in the agrammatic problems.
