Abstract
Oral Reading for Language in Aphasia (ORLA) involves repeatedly reading aloud sentences and paragraphs, first in unison with the clinician, and then independently. ORLA was administered to 25 individuals with chronic nonfluent aphasia in a delayed-treatment study. Outcome measures included the Western Aphasia Battery, the Reading Comprehension Battery for Aphasia, and discourse production measures. A comparison of change in scores from baseline to pre-treatment versus pre-treatment to post-treatment provides an index of the efficacy of the ORLA treatment. Reading improved markedly in the subjects with severe aphasia; writing and discourse production changes were evident in subjects with mild-moderate aphasia.
