Abstract

Generalization, the application of skills in untrained circumstances, is of growing importance in aphasia therapy due to the increasing demands for effective intervention programs. Although this issue has been raised in a growing number of studies, it remains unclear which methods should be used. Some view generalization as applying skills to untrained linguistic items, while others define it as harnessing skills to untrained life circumstances. This paper will compare existing intervention programs which have activities/phases specifically devoted to generalization, determine which of these methods have been shown to be most effective and recommend avenues for possible future research directions.
