Abstract
Limited research exists addressing the impact of intense treatment on auditory comprehension in aphasia. This study investigated whether an intensive auditory comprehension treatment protocol, improved participants’ detection of auditory comprehension breakdowns and word-level auditory comprehension. Three participants received 40 hours of treatment over 4 weeks. This study established that an intense auditory comprehension protocol can be successfully utilized with people who have severe chronic aphasia. Improved comprehension of single words occurred in two of three participants with generalization demonstrated to untreated words. Improved self awareness led to increased of self- initiated compensatory strategies to aid in comprehension.
