Abstract

ANELT is designed to assess how effectively an aphasic client can convey a verbal message in everyday life situations despite various linguistic deficits. Its main underlying assumption is that the level of communicative effectiveness is determined by the adequacy with which information is communicated. Our routine applications of ANELT have demonstrated that the five-point scale for understandability (Scale A) remains highly subjective and requires operationalisation. In this presentation we analyze ANELT responses from tests from different stages in the recovery process to arrive at a more objective scoring procedure and to provide an index for evaluating changes in verbal communication.
