Abstract

Stimulus-driven aspects of images within multiple-choice test items may interfere with valid assessment of comprehension in individuals with aphasia. Control of those factors is crucial because: 1) multiple-choice items are a critical component of comprehension tasks in most aphasia batteries and 2) individuals with aphasia have a highly likelihood of general and visual attention deficits. Forty adults’ eye movements were recorded while viewing 40 image sets with and without a verbal stimulus. Results indicate 1) significant influence of image characteristics on visual attention and 2) interference of stimulus-driven processes with the verbal stimulus on visual attention. Clinical implications are discussed.
