Abstract

The Portsmouth Speech and Language Therapy [SLT] service to the adult population has seen very considerable growth over the past 5-10 years, with a significant number of newly developed posts at all levels. Even with these developments, there has been a growing dissatisfaction and frustration within the SLT team regarding the quality and quantity of the service provided to people with aphasia, the familiar emphasis upon dysphagia being one of the key contributing factors. The Portsmouth SLT service plan 2003 – 2006 identified aphasia as a key area for development.
