Concurrent Treatment of Reading and Spelling in Aphasia. In Clinical Aphasiology Conference: Clinical Aphasiology Conference (2004 : 34th : Park City, UT : May 2004) / : (2004).
The therapeutic value of a combined treatment for reading and spelling was examined in
a patient with chronic aphasia, alexia, and agraphia. Oral Reading Treatment (ORT) and
Copy and Recall Treatment (CART) were implemented to increase reading accuracy and
rate for text and increase spelling accuracy for single words. Results showed increases in
all domains. Treatment gains were maintained as shown by follow-up probes. Pre- and
post-treatment measures indicated generalization in that accuracy for new text and
reading and writing of functors not targeted in treatment were statistically significant for
positive change. In addition, treatment gains generalized to spoken language.
